Treatment of MS

When someone is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), their neurologist will discuss the available treatment options with them. There are two main types of treatment:

  • Treatment to relieve the symptoms of an attack (relapse)
  • Treatment to slow progression of MS.

While there are no cures for MS, these treatments help patients live with the condition. Details of medical treatments available for MS are discussed in the Treatment options section of this website.

A number of specialist healthcare professionals can also assist the patient in living with, and managing the symptoms of, MS. These include:

  • MS Nurse specialists who can provide information, support and timely advice and help patients towards self-management.
  • Ophthalmologists who can assist with eye problems such as blurred vision.
  • Urologists who can help with bladder problems and sexual difficulties in men.
  • Gynaecologists who can help with sexual difficulties in women.
  • Physiotherapists who can assist with exercises to improve day-to-day functioning.
  • Speech therapists who can help with communication issues.
  • Occupational therapists who can advise on mobility problems both at home and at work.
  • Psychologists who can help with coping strategies for emotional and cognitive difficulties.

Guidelines on the standards of care for people with disabling neurological conditions, including multiple sclerosis, have been drawn up by the Neurological Alliance of Ireland and are available online.
