Treatment of relapses

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a lifelong condition that progresses slowly in most people. When symptoms occur suddenly it is called a ‘relapse’. These symptoms will depend on which part of the brain or spinal cord is affected and can be relatively minor such as numbness in a hand or more disabling and obvious.

Corticosteroids (steroids), such as Methylprednisolone, are the standard treatment for a relapse in MS. They relieve the symptoms of a relapse, but have no effect on the overall course of MS.

While Methylprednisolone is commonly used for the treatment of relapse in MS, you may be prescribed other steroid medications by your doctor. For more information see the patient information leaflet you will receive with your medication or ask a healthcare professional.
